Heiligenstein – star of the week

01. December 2008 | 13:58

This week, the Heiligenstein vineyard could show off all its qualities: Lyra, Alte Reben marrying intense maturity and freshness, fruit and acidity.

The shrunken dry berries (Trockenbeeren) were harvested separately and pressed in our miniature Speidelpresse, which works by very slowly inflating a rubber tube on the inside of the press. Only a few cases were harvested with sensational 36° KMW. The quality of this must is likely to be superior even to 2005, 2000 and 1998.

Grüner Veltliner also yielded a TBA. While the dry Käferberg and Lamm are especially beautiful, I personally still prefer the Riesling due to its particularly brilliant taste.

Only our hopes for ice wine were disappointed – so far. The Muskateller grapes are still waiting for Siberian cold, and even a Muskateller Beerenauslese is impossible at the moment, as the berries are still fresh and healthy, and not sufficiently shrunken for such a wine.

  • Riesling grape in the net.
  • Thomas Klinger and Maria picked grapes for the sweet wines.
