The smell of snow and winter

22. October 2007 | 13:25

Cold nights with temperatures as low as 0°C brought the smell of winter and let the taste of autumn manifest itself in our grapes.

The early ripeners among the Austrian red wine varietals, Zweigelt and St Laurent, are now harvested completely, as are Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.
A part of our Chardonnay is still in the vineyards (no sign of rotting yet…) and we expect a particularly forceful, complex wine.

Last week, we harvested Riesling in the Steinmassel vineyard in order to maintain the lightness and freshness. On the Heiligenstein, we harvested the younger vines for the Riesling Kamptaler Terrassen.

Still waiting are the great vineyards: Heiligenstein (Riesling), Lamm and Käferberg (Grüner Veltliner), Berg-Vogelsang and Loiser-Berg (also Grüner Veltliner) will be harvested as soon as the late autumn sun breaks through the clouds – or the grapes reveal their true colours during cold and dry nights.

  • Still completely healthy grapes.
