Riesling Steinmassel Reserve
2013
18 p Richard Hemming MW & Tamlyn Currin, The Great Riesling Revolution, May 2016
So much stony reserve on the nose and yet there is a hint of intensely ripe apricots. Exquisite fruit, much more so than any of his other wines, but it's encased in a corset of steel. So intense! The tension is achingly high, playing a shimmering skein of texture and flavour from start to the long finish. Worth every penny.

Brundlmayer’s 2012 Riesling Steinmassel Reserve – which has a less geologically specific “regular” counterpart from younger vines – originates in a half-century-old stand on pure, mica-rich gneiss. At 13.5% it represents by a whisker the highest in alcohol of this collection’s Rieslings, which speaks volumes to their collective restraint. Fresh lime and ripe pear mingle with lychee and tangerine rind in the nose, anticipating the ripe, fruity richness of a polished, glossy palate performance to whose generosity banana and apple contribute, while stony, alkaline undertones offer both backdrop and counterpoint. Look for this to impress through at least 2022.

Powerful and supremely rich, this is concentrated Riesling. It combines a strong mineral texture with brighter acidity and complex citrus fruits. It’s a wine with a great future, both steely and structured. Don’t drink before 2017.
