Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben
2011
92 p. Wine & Spirits Magazine, Tara Q. Thomas April 2014:
All about mineral compexity, this presents the deep savor of the earth on a texture that's compellingly soft and satin-rich. It's the seductive feel of the wine that stays with you, broad and focused. Underneath that texture, the wine hints at coriander spice and lentils, lasting with creamy, umami power. It comes from Bründlmayer's oldest vines in a number of his vineyards, averaging 45 years old. Age it to let the wine's complexities emerge.
2011
Full bouquet of peaches and pineapple and honey as well as mineral and spicy flavors; on the palate full-bodied and very tight, lyches pineapple dried abricots roasted chocolate beans and white peaches honey flowers, powerful although pure and precise, balanced with elegant acidity and multilayered extract, excellent grip, very long spicy and mineral finish, and really promising potential.
2008
Flowers & fresh (exotic) fruit (citrus and pineapple); apples and pears some peppery spice & just a hint of toasty & nutty aromas , on the palate dry following through with mouthwatering fruit also grapefruit, pineapple, melon, lots of minerals and some peppery spice, concentrated, with a good grip, and harmonically integrating acidity, a quite subtle wine well balanced showing typical minerals and spice in the long after taste.
2007
Brilliant intensive nose: fresh fruit and delicate flowery flavours, citrus quinces, pineapple, apples and some peppery spice, on the palate following through with mouthwatering exotic fruit, grapefruit, pineapple, melon, creamy texture then lots of minerals and spice; concentrated, with a good grip and harmonically integrating acidity, impressive opulence yet well balanced showing typical minerals and peppery spice in the long after taste.
2004
Exotic fruit (grapefruit and pineapple); apples and pears and some peppery spice, on the palate following through with good fruit, mineral and spice; very concentrated, with good grip, a powerful wine that seems leaner because of a lively acidity, minerals and spice appear in the long finish.
2003
Picked in late October, this finished at 13,0% alcohol. Muskmelon, banana, marzipan, sweet florals and tropical fruit in the nose. Rich, polished and soft on the palate yet notably elegant and refined, this glides into a long, diversely floral, melony, herbal and entirely heat-free finish. A sweet perfume of a wine, perfectly proportional and possibly most suitable for enjoyment away from the dinner table. (Stephen Tanzer´s International Wine Cellar)
2002
With only 12,5% alc. This is the first vintage to de-emphasize ripeness. It´s phenomenally concentrated and "cool", a passionate introvert. It seems to perfectly encapsulate every fine facet of unexceptionally ripe GrüVe; a touchstone wine. (Terry Theise Estate Selcetions/Michael Skurnik Wines, NY)
2001
Medium straw. Classic GV nose, with that white-pepper character, white peach and apricot, and a mineral tang. Rich, bold, rounded, fine acidity, tight and racy. A very slight bracing bitterness but not disagreeable, and it adds a bit of complexity. Admirable concentration, silky texture and very persistent. Very good length. (Stephen Brook, The world of fine wine 5/2005)
2001
Special for our friends in Sweden...
(Magazin vin & MAT)
1999
It´s monumental, the stony minerality built into an alpine peak where the air is fresh and crisp and the clarity of the sky allows you to see forever. Fruit and herb flavors sprout from the rock, the sweetness of apricots blended with the tartness of white berries, the florality of linden mixing with garrigue-like herbs. It´s a marvel of a wine, completely arresting, with a grip that gets you in the gut and just won´t let go. Bründlmayer´s top grüners age beautifully and this would be a fine candidate to lay down. (Terry Theise Selections/Michael Skurnik Wines, NY)
1997
Medium straw. Lively apricot aromas with a dah of honey; perfect and unexaggeratecd ripeness. Lush, rounded, opulent, well balanced with no trace of excessive alcohol, and it has retained its minerality on the finish. Fine balance, complex and subtle with a lively finish. Still perfectly fresh. Good length. (Stephen Brook, The world of fine wine 5/2005)
1997
Clean buttery notes, a hint of tropical fruit and an attractive attack. Clean and firm acidity support a rich and extremely expressive palate with a lick of clean citric fruit on the finish and impressive length. (Simon Field, The world of fine wine 5/2005)
1997
Much richness, concentration and depth in this Grüner Veltliner. The chamomile, peach and white pepper flavors are locked in a firm grip of acidity, and a mineral note comes through on the long finish. (Wine Spectator)
1997
Great wine. Has the thick internal creaminess of real old-vines-wine. Has the unctuousness and vastness of scope of great white Burgundy. But has a structure and grip that few white Burgundies attain. Incredible pudding-y tropical fruit richness, breathtaking spice, mass with focus. (Terry Theise Selections/Michael Skurnik Wines, NY)
1996
Delicious top-drawer wines like this deserve a wider audience. Gorgeous ripe, spicy, white pepper and paprika-scented white. Zingy lemon and grapefruit-spiked finish. (The Times)
1996
Honey, syrup and melon aromas, with rich, rounded fruit balanced by lively acidity on the palate. (Decanter)
1996
Has something of the peppery grapefruit notes typical of the variety, but they are joined by hints of flint, fennel and lychee. There is a superb richness of flavour and texture. (Wine Magazine)
1996
Highly extracted. Tropical fruits, lemons, clove. Generous fruit flavors give this an appealing and forceful personality. Exotically spicy on the finish. (Wine Enthusiast)
1996
Fat, spicy, concentrated. Plenty of depth. Very good. (The Vine, Clive Coates)
1996
This old-vines cuvée is decidedly snap pea and green bean in flavor. It has undeniable richness and concentration and faintly sweet, honeyed length. (Stephen Tanzer´s International Wine Cellar)
1995
Intense, with peach, citrus and white pepper flavors that are buoyed along by lively acidity, then climax in a complex and lingering finish. A wine with amplitude, matched by precision balance. (Wine Spectator)
1995
Enormous density of inner material, molten concentration; few if any white Burgundies have this power, this structure or this concentration any more. Improbably balance and grace for such a Mack truck of a wine. I didn´t taste a better Veltliner on this trip. (Terry Theise Selections/Michael Skurnik Wines, NY)
